Finland’s latest 5G spectrum auction gets underway

Finland’s latest 5G spectrum auction gets underway

Finland’s Ministry of Transport and Communications (Liikenne-ja viestintaministerio, MoTC) has announced the start of the country’s latest auction of 5G-suitable spectrum. In a press release regarding the development, the regulator noted that three blocks of frequencies in the 26GHz band will be up for grabs, with each block offering 800MHz of spectrum. A starting price of EUR7 million (USD7.9 million) per block has been set, with the spectrum on offer to be useable from 1 July 2020, and licences valid until 31 December 2033.

Meanwhile, the MoTC also confirmed that the lower part of the 26GHz band (24.25GHz–25.10GHz) is being excluded from the auction. It said that these frequencies are being reserved for ‘the construction of local networks’, while adding that ‘in future, local networks could be constructed in ports and industrial facilities’.
